HHWC hosted a five-day Beginner Python Camp from August 11 to August 15, 2025. Led by instructor Xiao Mao and assisted by Zhebin Zhang, Kerry , and Kevin Chen. The camp taught students Python fundamentals, and functioned as a gateway to programming. Class material was built with a special focus on game design to make sessions both memorable and enjoyable. Zoom webinars were hosted daily for a work-week, each two hours long. In addition to the regular lecture, Xiao Mao also dedicated invaluable time to reviewing and assessing student homework, and answered student specific questions.
Day 1: Introduced students to Python, discussed the modern uses of the language, and touched on precedence and variables. Additionally, students wrote their first lines of code in IDLE, Python’s built-in IDE.
Xiao Mao(3 hours), Zhebin (Tom) Zhang(2 hours), Kerry Xu( 2 hours)
Day 2: Students were taught flow control statements and terminology such as loops, conditions, and boolean logic. These were then implemented in a pretend log-in program where only a certain passcode would grant you access.
Xiao Mao(3 hours), Zhebin (Tom) Zhang(2 hours), Kerry Xu(2 hours)
Day 3: We discussed functions, their uses, and how they save time by removing redundancy. Students also learned how to make a simple number guessing game.
Xiao Mao(3 hours), Kevin Chen(2 hours)
Day 4: Discussed the uses of lists, methods, and how to manipulate them to make a grocery list program where a user could add or remove items and sort it alphabetically.
Xiao Mao(3 hours), Zhebin (Tom) Zhang(2 hours), Kerry Xu(2 hours)
Day 5: Students learned how to make tic-tac-toe in and reflected on future uses of Python in the form of a program that could potentially save time for a person on a daily basis.
Xiao Mao(3 hours), Kerry Xu(2 hours)
