The AYLUS Lake Washington branch hosted a 5-day Physics Camp for middle school students from July 21 to July 25. The camp offered an enriching educational experience, helping students build a solid foundation in physics while gradually exploring more advanced concepts. Our team members, Yufei Ye and Eric Huang, served as instructors during the camp. Each day, the regular lecture began at 10:00 a.m. and lasted for two hours. In addition to teaching, Yufei provided homework support, answered student questions, and dedicated time to reviewing and correcting assignments. Over the course of five sessions, participants engaged with core topics that are essential for understanding the physical world.
Day 1(July 21): Introduction to Physics and Vectors Students were introduced to the fundamental nature of physics—how it explains the universe—and learned about vectors, including how to represent and manipulate them graphically and mathematically.
Yufei Ye:3 hours Eric Huang: 2 hours
Day 2(July 22): Kinematics This session covered the key kinematic equations and quantities such as displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Students practiced identifying relevant variables in word problems and applying formulas to solve motion scenarios.
Yufei Ye:3 hours Eric Huang: 2 hours
Day 3(July 23): Dynamics Students examined Newton’s Laws of Motion and their real-world applications. They worked through examples involving common forces (like tension and friction), constructed free body diagrams, and tackled problems involving motion on inclines.
Yufei Ye:3 hours Eric Huang: 2 hours
Day 4(July 24): Energy and Work The camp explored different forms of energy—including kinetic, potential, and thermal—and discussed the work-energy theorem. Students practiced applying the principle of conservation of energy to analyze systems and solve problems.
Yufei Ye:3 hours Eric Huang: 2 hours
Day 5 (July 25): Momentum and Impulse In the final session, students learned about the impulse-momentum theorem, conservation of momentum, and how momentum changes during collisions and explosions. These lessons provided a glimpse into the behavior of objects in dynamic interactions.
Yufei Ye:3 hours Eric Huang: 2 hours
By the end of the camp, students had developed both conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills, empowering them to pursue further exploration in physics with confidence.
